Makes you stop and wonder why so many people are at risk of developing it. Read on to learn about common risk factors so you can sidestep gum disease and keep your smile healthy.

1. Poor Oral Hygiene

Like many dental issues, gum disease often boils down to plain old not taking good care of your teeth and gums. Plaque accumulates along the gumline when it’s not brushed or flossed away regularly. Over time, plaque can lead to gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease, which may cause red, swollen, or bleeding gums.

Without professional treatment and improved oral hygiene, gingivitis can worsen to the more serious stages of gum disease, known as periodontal disease, and affect the tissues and bone supporting your teeth.

2. Tobacco Use

Tobacco is not only a poor habit for your overall health, but smoking cigarettes, cigars, or chewing tobacco can also significantly increase the risk of gum disease.

Tobacco can interfere with the body’s ability to fight infection and may make it more difficult for damaged gum tissue to heal. If you’re a tobacco user, talk to your dentist about how to protect your oral health and consider resources for quitting.

3. All in the Family

Some poor souls, through no fault of their own, may be more susceptible to gum disease because of their genetics. Having a family history of periodontal problems doesn’t mean you’ll definitely develop gum disease, but it can be one factor that puts you at greater risk.

If gum disease runs in your family, maintaining excellent oral hygiene and visiting your dentist every 6 months for regular preventive care is especially important.

4. Hormonal Changes

Changes in hormone levels can make gums more sensitive and increase their tendency to become inflamed. Hormonal changes can occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, among other life stages.

During these periods, again, daily brushing and flossing along with consistent dental visits are going to be your best defense in warding off bad gum health.

5. Certain Health Conditions and Medications

Some health conditions can affect your risk of developing gum disease. Diabetes, for example, is associated with an increased risk of periodontal problems, particularly when blood sugar levels aren’t properly managed.

Certain medications can also affect oral health by contributing to dry mouth. Because saliva helps protect the teeth and gums, reduced saliva flow can make it easier for harmful bacteria to accumulate.

Watch for warning signs such as bleeding, swollen or tender gums, persistent bad breath, gum recession, or loose teeth. If you notice changes in your gums, schedule a dental examination.

About the Practice

Your gums are the foundation of a healthy smile – that’s why we proudly offer gum disease treatment here at Grateful Dentists in Billerica. Drs.
